To hear that, I Have got ser # if I hear anything I will informe the police. What airline ? and what did they say about it ?

Thank you for your words of support. This was American Airlines, connecting in Ft. Lauderdale. I was en route to Indonesia for a magazine shoot and that had to be cancelled. I live most of the year outside of the USA and always feel that I am "safe" when I get back to American soil. It really hurts to survive the terrors overseas and then be attacked by your countrymen upon arriving home. I believe that the screening of luggage was for the good of all and to protect from foreign attack. Who will protect us from the protectors?

What have the airlines said?

American Airlines, Los Angeles: "Ah, electronics....we are not responsible....sorry there is nothing we can do." Refused to file a claim or take any information. Refused to even look at the camera case.

LAPD response: "No evidence it happened here, nothing we can do." Did take an incident report.

Broward County Sheriff: "Couldn't happen here ... Afterall, we arrested several TSA employees in Ft. Lauderdale just recently for stealing jewellry from luggage. I suspect the Bahamas." Assigned a Suspicious Incident number but not a Grand Theft Report.

Royal Bahamian Polce Force: "It could not happen here in the Bahamas and do not make dis a national race thang." Refused to file any report, take serial numbers or take my name or contact number. I was escorted from the building.

American Airlines, Nassau: "I cannot take a claim because that insinates (?) that it happened here. It could not happen here because the luggage is in controlled, secured holding area guarded by US Customs until it goes on to the plane."

US Customs, Nassau: After they stopped laughing about the "controlled, secured holding area guarded by US Customs" they gave me a tour of the secure facility. A conveyor belt to waiting trolleys that take the luggage to the planes. No fence, no, holding area, no closed circuit television and only onse sleeping guard in the corner and out of view.

I have no fear of flying. Doing nearly 100,000 miles per year, I have long lost the fear of death at altitiude or slow death from airline food. Now my true terror is my luggage. Why must I look at my personal effects and assume that I will never see them again once they are checked in at the airport.

If we want to look for terrorists, we look no further than someone standing guard over our luggage. We are open targets with dollar signs.

ThatsMe:

The camera you have linked to E-Bay is a Nikonos V camera....good buy, if you are interested! I would attach photos here, but I don't seem to have that option.

Here is a link to the camera: http://nikonimaging.com/global/products/filmcamera/underwater/rs/

the 20-35mm lens

the 50mm lenses

The 13mm Fisheye lens has become so rare that I cannot find an image on the internet.

Thanks for the link....believe me, I am GLUED to E-Bay international!

Sorry to hear about your theft.

In the interest of "security" we are no longer permitted to lock our checked in luggage, unless of course we want the lock cut off if they need to check something that looked suspicious on the X-Ray machine.

The poorly thought out side of all this is that we are now at the hands of the who knows how many "scum bag" employees that are stealing from unlocked luggage along with whomever else can get access to it.

Rumor has it that TSA is soon to have a lock that we all can use and they have a "master key" to in the event they need to open a bag to check on a suspicious item. Oh sure, that will work.

Perhaps we can put a secretly placed seal on our bags so if it they are opened we can at least know where it happened and who has to take the report, for what that is worth.

That's the main reason all my camera gear goes in the cabin with me. 'Course that's not always possible when you have lots of gear. The only time my luggage has ever been tampered with was in the States. But this was before 9/11 and TSA and it's much worse now. As Gilligan explained, we have to leave everything open 'for our safety'!

Yes, i would love to have all of my gear in the cabin with me as carry-on, but that space is reserved for land cameras and my laptop computer. See they were stolen from checked in luggage two years ago and now they travel with me or stay home.

The underwater cameras reluctantly had to go in the belly of the plane because the bag is about the size of a small refrigerator and weighed about 70 pounds. Far and above any cabin allowance in First, Business or Economy Class.

I am so glad the TSA approved locks were mentioned. Here is the website and read the ads carefully and see if you don't find them equally hilarious.
http://www.tamperseal.com/Store.asp...Travel+Sentry++SearchAlert++TSA+Luggage+Locks

With these amazing locks from TSA, we never have to worry about unwarranted entry into our luggage because the lock clicks from green to red when TSA or any unauthorized person tampers with your luggage. So, what is the difference between TSA scanner and unauthorized tampering? Does the person doing the unauthorized tampering leave more of my valuables behind than the TSA screener?

It is comforting to know that now I can spend almost $10 each for a lock that does not safeguard me from the same theives that have robbed me twice before. At least I know that after my luggage has been rifled and robbed, it will be securely locked when in flight so none of the unwanted bits escape during transit.

I amy sound bitter, and that is because I am. The last theft from checked baggage was valued at nearly $19,000. This theft is easily twice that amount and it does not consider the lost work in Indonesia, the time, cost of the flights and the emotional drain on my trust. The cameras can be replaced, the time, loss of business, and loss of faith in our security services cannot be recompensed.
