Jeff (or anyone else that may know),

when I went size out my shoulder straps a ended up with 26.5"... So on the magic line between large and extra large. I will be diving in cold water. I feel very disproportional at this point with a medium waist and all. Anyways, some advice would be nice.

Bear with me as I'm sitting here at a computer, just sipping on my first cup of coffee, and not there with you to measure you up. If you're going to be wearing a thick wetsuit/drysuit (which I'm guessing is the case here) you may need to bump up to XL shoulder. BUT this is all to get the waist section of the BC to sit on your hips, that is the real thing to be considering if we have to decide between measurements and actual real-world fit.

How much extra strap is there going to be when I'm diving a not so thick wet suit? This would include summer diving above our somewhat fridged thermocline.

Sorry, apparently my reply yesterday didn't get saved.

The difference in strap length on the BC between different wetsuits could be an inch or so, I really don't have a good example/picture to demonstrate this. Possibly someone here could show a picture to help you out.

I can show you the difference in strap length between shoulder sizes though. If you look at the sizing video at 2:00 you'll see the Ranger with a size LG shoulder section, lots of extra strap for a guy my size. At the 3:40 mark you'll see that we put the size MD shoulder section on and how much the strap length changes.
