I was attempting humor. A lot of divers are obsessed with the "+" and it drives hydrotesters crazy. DIY "+" stamping is not a good idea, both because it is illegal and because its easy to spot. And once spotted, grounds to condemn the tank, or at the very least refuse to fill it.

Good try Vance!

Well that stamps can be bought, every bigger company has a set. I doubt anyone would spot it.
What is next? Why do a hydro? Just stamp it yourself. Why do any checks?

Next will be a few exploding tanks in the news a few dead people, some law suits from bystanders and some politicians will make some crazy laws that mostly hurt honest people.

I can almost hear it: "Only certified companies are allowed to use/fill/own scuba tanks to protect us all."

Regulations on high pressure gases are needed. If someone only dive alone and fill the tank himself, than he can do what he want. I don't want to be the one who fill a tank with homemade stamps and blown into pieces.

(Short version: You are complete right)

Having the data to support the calculation wouldn't be the same as being qualified to arrive at the result would it?

I'm sure the owner could whack the mallet under supervision.

If it amounts to knowledge of simple math to apply the data that was correctly arrived at why not.
I couldn't care less about the plus as I fill my own and have the data and the knowledge to apply it so I know if I can fill 10% over, plus stamp or not.

Knowledge and qualification are two separate things. I can have the qualification and still not have the knowledge or I can have the knowledge and not the qualification. I rather have the knowledge.

mine from 72 were good until the LDS wrecked the valves (old top of post style)... at the time it happened, I couldn't locate replacement valves, so they were traded for some "competative pricing" and a different shop... whish the resources available now were avaialble then...

I was just talking with the DOT, and asked them about this, and was told that if the tank qualified for the "+". but the shop neglected to stamp it at the time, it would be OK to return it to the shop to add the "+" as long as the test data in the logbook showed that it qualified. .

I suspected as much, but laws are not usually based on common sense.

Since phone answers are always a bit suspect, and this conflicts with what you have heard, I've requested a formal Letter of Interpretation just to nail it down.

Any offical word from them yet?

That was great information. Unfortunately my tank stamps do not give much information. What I do know is it is a Coyne 3AA tank with a 9/93+ original hydro and 2400 working pressure The only other info is that it is galvanized and what I suspect is the serial number (see below). From the suggested reading above I suspact my lack of a stamped REE number may be the downfall of not getting the + without exspressly having asked for it. I guess I am just going to have to fuss to the LDS and see what happens. Any chance anyone here knows the REE number of this tank? Or any other helpful info?

DOT-3AA 2400 A 646710 GALV 9^93+
Dimensions Approx 24" x 8" diam

Coyne tanks might be hard to get data for. Sounds like an LP95, btw.

I just got my tanks back from a fresh hydro. These are for use in "Cave Country", DOT approved for a 50% overfill. (RIN is blurred out because I don't want everyone rushing to this shop, they'll be too backed up to hydro the AL80s I found before the powder coater does his next run.) Btw, anyone know where I can get a cheap 3/4" NPS tap? I want to put a yoke valve in my Genesis HP tanks, but can't find one that fits the 0.875-14 UNF thread.
