Hello All,

My wife and I are traveling to Roatan in June, and staying in a condo with some (mostly non diving) friends right on half moon bay. We plan on doing our AOW certification while there, having just learned to dive last year, and done 9 post-cert dives (2 in belize, 1 cozumel from a cruise in june, and in 6 key largo in October). Have no night-diving experience at all.

We spent one day last year in roatan, mostly around half moon bay (snorkeling, eating). So have at least a basic feel for the area.

We are planning on doing a night dive as part of our course while there. It had crossed my mind that it might be fun (for us, as well as our non diver friends), to go out and try night-snorkeling there in half moon bay. As of now, though, we don't own lights.

What I am trying to decide is, should i buy a pair of lights for us before we go? Is snorkeling at night in that area likely to give us some interesting sights? We are staying at one of the condos on the south side of the bay, though i think we should also have access to a kayak to get out along the penninsula. I figure the dive shop would have lights for us to use during a night dive with them, so i don't know if buying my own light would be worth it just for a night or two of snorkeling. In the near future, we are likely to only go diving about twice a year....

The light i have my eye on is the Princeton Tec Miniwave LED Divinglamp (337 lumens), which runs about 110$. There are several cheaper options by princeton, also a 45$ light by Dorcy (Dorcy 41-1467 220 Lumen Super Flux LED Submersible Dive Light) that is not as bright, but much cheaper.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,

--steve

I have the Princeton tech mini wave that is a few years old (150 lumens) and it offers plenty of light. The mini wave packs very nice and after you do a night dive you'll be hooked. I can't offer much for the snorkeling at Half Moon Bay but I would not always count on the dive shop having enough lights. When we were on Roatan the Dive shop ran out, but the wife and I had packed our own. Do yourself a favor and just get one now you'll be happy you did.

Atlantic Sea Divers at Half Moon resort will provide lights, wetsuit, and a guide to take you around Half Moon bay on a night snorkel for $20 per person. Their lights are not expensive, but they are adequate. It's a great option for your non diving companions, as they won't likely have either lights or a wetsuit. The snorkel lated about an hour, and there was quite a lot to see. Lots of big lobster, morays, octopus, coral shrimp, scorpionfish, and more.

Until you decide that you really like it, rent the light.

Huge advancements in LED lights are arriving every day, the prices are declining. Wait!

This one is already a bargain, I use one as my primary and one as backup...

It's all you'll need.
The lights listed that you are currently looking at are decidedly overkill for clear, shallow water snorkeling.

Thanks for the advice so far guys. I figure if we pick up 2 lights, we can do the snorkeling 2 at a time with our friends. And at 55$ a light, that seems like it'll be worth it (only a bit more than the night snorkel).

We've got all the rest of the gear needed for snorkeling.

I'll read up on those Fuego lights.
