Hi Im new here but I have a question. I'm starting scuba classes in January at my college. I was wondering if I should wear a wetsuit during pool sessions? I'm 5'3 and like 130ish so I do get cold easily. I live in Oregon and I surf so the wetsuits I use aren't suited to diving plus I have outgrown them. So I was wondering if anyone could help me out with this? Also what are good suits for when I do have to do open water dives for certification since I am on the smaller side? I may have more questions regarding later. Thanks a bunch
 
Drop an e-mail to the instructor. The college where I took classes had some for class use.
 
Really depends on your own temperature sensitivity. With water above 75 I don't wear any other than possibly a skin.
 
Hi Chris and welcome.

I have a couple questions for you... Where in OR are you, and what school are you taking the class through. I live in Salem, and the dive shop we took classes through, Salem Scuba had us wear shortys in the pool even though it was heated.... I think that was good since the water where we did our OW dives was freaken cold! So it got us used to wearing something and the snug feeling of the suit around your body. That way when we were on the OW dives it was one less distraction to deal with.
 
well, bmcsteve it turns out I'm an hour south of you. Eugene to be percise..which at the the time im writing this my hands are freezing off from it being 30 outside. But anyway im taking the class at Lane Community. I cant stand anything below 88 lol. Our pool always had to be that temp even in the summer else I wouldnt swim.
 
I would find out what the water temps in the pool are going to be like. And depending on your tolerance for cold, it may be a good idea to have a 3mm wetsuit. The pool that I teach in is generally at 90F and while many are ok at this temperature, I've seen quite a few people shivering after being in the pool for half an hour. Everyone is going to be different, and being a little too warm is better than being too cold.
 
I dont mind wetsuits at all...being as I surf Ive gotten a warm fuzzy feeling from them. Now if only there was a way to wear them all the time?. What suits are good though? hooded, zipper vs zipperless? I know diving suits are different than surfing ones so thats why Im asking
 
It has been my experience that Community College dive classes typically use a local dive shop to run the classes, which in turn provide the gear you will need. Salem Scuba does that for Chemeketa CC, and Linnfield. They require the students to purchase mask snorkel and fins and provide the rest of the gear for the classes as part of your tuition / lab fees. Were you told that you had to buy your own stuff up front? At any rate, I would find out who is running the class, visit with them, and ask for recommendations. If I am correct, I think they may be using Eugene Skin Divers.
 
If the pool is inside and heated don't worry about it you should be fine.
