Does anyone know if the day trip boats out of Port Douglas have any standby pricing, or are they locked in?

Poseidon, QuickSilver, Silversonic?

Thanks for any info!

Nobody wants to answer my questions anymore? :(

If you want to try for standby, what is the best method? Can you call and get prices, or do you have to show up in-person to get that rate?

Are there discount tiers based upon the time to depart? Example would be: 30% one week before, 50% the day before, etc...

Thanks again guys for any and all information! :D

I am even seeing standby rates for hotels as well. I think I may book everything once I hit the ground. That would be quite different than what I would normally do. Should be interesting....

there are standby rates for some boats but it usually varies i think (i dont need standby rates :)

quicksilver and silversonic are the same company (actually i think they are one of the largest dive companies in australia - quicksilver group), and i'm not sure how flexible they are with pricing (locals do get 50% off trips though!)

just ask in at any of the tour desks and see if they have standby rates.. i have seen chalk boards offering it. but i havnt really gone in and asked which boats they supported

Superform,
Thanks for the information. Questions...

How is it that "locals" get 50% off? How do they verify a "local"?

What would be the best location (road / area) to scope for chalk board prices? Is it better to contact the operator directly? (by phone or in person?)

Are the operator offices all located in the same general area?

Wikel,

I believe what Superform meant was that if you behave the way 'locals' do (i.e. they are able to spend the time comparing prices from store to store) you would find the great deals. If you're really out for a bargain, get out them walking shoes.

I do not know about PD, but certainly in Cairns, there is heavy competition, and you find bargain chalk board deals. There is no guarentee on a reservation on the dive tour this way as this strategy is generally used by operators to fill up the numbers. They generally have a limited number of places on offer at these rates (much like the airline industry) and so internation tourists tend to guarentee their place by booking ahead since they are usually restricted as to how much time they have available and do not want to be disappointed. I would be highly disappointed if I dedicated 5 days to diving and couldnt go out because the dive boats were full.

For example, on my last dive trip, as an out of towner, I found a great deal, however, it did not fit in with my itinery (different companies launch on different days, so you MUST take that into consideration if you plan to do the el cheapo method). I found one operator with space at chalk board rates (the rest were sold out) and gave up some rain forest adventures to fit it into my schedule (I lost on a rainforest accomadation deposit but saved even more on the dive deal).

So really, locals = flexible. They're generally not restricted by time and are willing to sit out to get the cheapest deal possible (and those deals are GOLD!). If you book directly with the operator, you will most likely be paying RRP. If you book through an agent, they are almost guarenteed to be cheaper unless it's the Underwater Explorer (?) Research Vessel. Operators can give you the heads up with information that might prove valuable to you that agents do not know of (such as number of places available etc.).

What I ended up doing: Booked Chalk board deal in Cairns, booked through an agent. It was fantastic. Chalk board deals can not only be cheaper, but may even offer great rental deals. Perhaps even free rental to ALL gear if you're lucky, as was my case. The more flexible YOU are, the better your chance at getting a great deal.

Note: My trip was not a 1 day dive trip, so the conditions / restrictions I faced may not apply to you.

Good Luck.

Scubakai,

Thanks for the info. I will be in Cairns from June 9th - June 21st, so I have a good amount of time. I understand the "launch on certain days" statement. I have a fairly flexible schedule. Family dive and snorkel can be at the beginning or end of the Cairns time. So the 7 day trip to Coral Sea / Cod Hole could be at the beginning or end as well. I'm working out a list of hotels and operators that are preferred and will order the list based upon quality, launch date, tour days, etc...

I have read somewhere that standby prices are not available until 48hrs before departure. Does any know if that is true? Also I have seen statements that the discount can be somewhere between 30% - 50% of the listed MSRP. I have seen more 30% than 50%, so I'm wondering when does the 30% usually start and when does the 50% start (one week out vs. the day before departure)?

Also I still haven't heard if you can call or have to be in-person to get those discounts. I will be in Brisbane from June 7th - June 9th, so if I could call to check prices before arriving in Cairns it would be nice.

Contact the operators directly and ask them - they'd be the best place to get specific information, I'd imagine.

Looks like you only have 11 days in the area - that doesn't leave much flexibility for liveaboards, so make sure you know their schedules before you spend a lot of time comparing prices!

you need to be a local to get locals prices :)

you show them your drivers licence and they give you a locals card that you can use on there boats

What would be the best location (road / area) to scope for chalk board prices? Is it better to contact the operator directly? (by phone or in person?) anywhere in the centre of the city.. its about 4-5 blocks square

Are the operator offices all located in the same general area?

yes most are located within 100m of each other.. except for deep sea diver den which is about 15min walk out of the city centre

Guys,

Thanks for the info. Looks like my wife is pooing on my son and I going on a 7day trip, so I had to choose between the Cod Hole / Ribbon Reef and Coral Sea trip. I choose the Coral Sea trip...

Hope it is a good choice... so many places to visit :(
