I just got a BP/W package, and the bolts attaching the STA to the BP are inserted from the BP side with the wingnuts on the STA side. Is this standard? For some reason I was expecting it to be the other way around. Is there any disadvantage in doing it this way? Seems like I won't cut up my face donning the rig like this.

That's backwards to every BP/W setup I've seen...

Potential disadvantages:

1. If you need to tighten the wing nuts, you'll have to take the tank off first

2. If the bolts have a square shoulder to stop them turning, the holes in the BP are usually round, so they'll spin and/or damage the BP

3. If you wanted to swap to double tanks for a dive, there may be more work involved

4. The wing nuts might interfere with the proper seating of the tank and/or routing of the cam bands

Not sure how you don your rig - over your head I'm guessing - but if you're worried about cutting your face, maybe you should get a BP pad/pocket... and perhaps you're doing it wrong?

I've donned a BP/W twice at this point, neither time with a tank :) I was mostly brainstorming.

guessing you got a used rig? Not sure what company would ship out a system out that way. Do you put on a coat the same way you donn a BC? Why is your face any where near the inside of the backplate???

I could try that. Was flipping it over my head, seemed easier since I had a nice solid bit of plate to hold onto. Again, I wasn't actually concerned about hitting my head on the wingnuts, I was trying to imagine why they might be reversed.
