@chrisjur

Can't tell you much, but I did dive the Dhaalu Atoll by LOB a couple of years before the pandemic. Eagle rays and a healthy population of sharks were what I remember.

Dec. is a good time for most places in the Maldives (due to the end of the southwest monsoon). The atoll is off the beaten track which should mean fewer divers, fewer boats, more schools of fish, etc.

Thanks for the insight!

Bump: anyone been to Vommuli recently? Considering the St. Regis versus the Ritz Carlton, and need to balance good diving with the hotel experience. I’ve been to the Maldives 3x previously (including 2 weeks of Deep South on Scubaspa) but it’s my husband’s first time. Thanks for any input!

I did make it to the St. Regis Maldives back in January and it was superb. I won't go deep into the details, but it's what you would expect from St. Regis regarding the food, service, bungalows, and activities.

The diving was very good. There is, of course, a dedicated dive operation on-site and all types of options to dive on-site, or within 30-40 mins via boat. We dove for 3 days, which looked like this:

Day 1: 1 tank dive shore at the house reef. There is a reef wall that runs on the outside of the property and has some very nice sea life. This was max 72 ft. drift dive. Even though you feel like you're miles from civilization, you realize that you're still pretty much within the resort area when you pop back to the surface, and they picked us up in a little zodiac to bring us back.

Day 2: 2 tank boat dive (shallow). These were two drive dives on the outer attol at 68 ft. max. Lots of amazing corals, sea life, sea turtles, etc.

Day 3: 2 tank boat dive (deep). Two drive dives, one on the inner attol, one on the outer attol. Maximum 90 feet. Again, lots of great stuff to see.

All dives include a guide, which is required by law in the Maldives.

Note that we were there during the high season, which means that winds, rain, storms, etc. was almost non-existent. As a result, water conditions were perfect. Keep this in mind as you consider your timing for the trip.

The dive service was excellent and first-class. It's concierge-style diving. You don't ever need to touch any of your equipment if you don't want to. The rental equipment was top-notch and well-kept. Dive boats were so clean you could eat off the floors. After each dive, you'll be treated to water, snacks, and fresh-brewed coffees from the on-board machine.

The shore dives are relatively reasonable from a price perspective. Boat dives add up, due to boat fees, fees for larger tanks, nitrox, tips, etc. But, of course, no one stays at the St. Regis and expects to find a bargain :)

I do A LOT of diving since I live in Miami, and I also travel a lot. I'm not going to say that it was the most amazing diving I've ever done in the world, but the experience was still great and I would highly recommend it. I would say it was the perfect combo of dive vs. non-dive activities. I would do it again.

Feel free to shoot me any specific questions.

Thanks so much for sharing your feedback! We’re going in December so the weather should be good.

I totally get it re: not the best diving of your life. I did 2 weeks on Scubaspa from Addu City back to Malé, with tiger sharks in Fulvahmulah, Koodoo Jetty, Alimatha Pier, whale sharks every night, etc. so I don’t expect it to be like that. My husband doesn’t dive though so this is a good compromise. We’re doing 5 nights at Fushifaru in Lhaviyani Atoll first and then 6 nights at StR, so hopefully a good mix of north and south of Malé.

You’re welcome. Sounds like a perfect vacation to me. Enjoy!
