so it looks like the SR11 and SR12 have been discontinued. This makes me second guess my original thinking. I have heard a lot of good things about it, but then why would they quit making it? (or is this common as "bigger and better" things come along.). What would be a similiar item?

yeah, kinda annoys me too! I think they are discontinuing the SR11/SR12 because they are so similar to the new stuff coming out this month. The new camcorders have a built in GPS and also more memory but other than that I think I read they are the same. They are more $$ of course. Since I won't be getting my new HD setup for awhile (my hubby just invested $$$$$ on Dslr, housing, lenses, ports...)...I may end up with one of those new Sonys or switch over to Canon. Ikelite will have housings done by then.

Which of course means that the SR12 that I just bought will plummet in price in the coming months. D'oh! On the other hand, someone looking for an SR12 in the next few months will be able to get quite a bargain on a great camera.

You can find the SR12 new for $850 online. Paid $950 just a month ago at Best Buy for the floor model (essentially new with full warranty). All technology gets replaced by something better/faster/cheaper but doesn’t mean that it stops working properly. Bought the SR12 to replace a DV camcorder that I've been using for 5+ years and still works great.
