:icon5: Did anyone find a spring that was open and dive it last weekend? If so how were the conditions?

I ended up canceling my trip last weekend.

Do you think the springs will be better for this comming weekend? If so which one?

(that is assuming we are not getting pounded by Ivan)

Blue Grotto and Devils Den and Paradise were open.Conditions were typical when a lot of classes go through

We went to Devils Den, not many divers, but there were two classes that were leaving as we arrived. Although i dont know where the cave system runs off to from DD, its obvious that there has been some water increase - almost 3 ft and rising from the level it was at about 6-8 weeks ago (almost to the main platform at the bottom of the main stairwell). Dont know about Blue Grotto or Paradise in terms of conditions, but arent they more enclosed sinks, so most water from the hurricanes would be runoff and percolation?? Dont think you will get much answer from anyone regarding most of the state parks or other commercial springs that are on runs from the Suwannee or Santa Fe rivers as they all seemed to be closed due to power outages/tree damage/river rising-intrusion-reversing flow type of problems.

Still hoping to get out this weekend if possible to a spring.

Paradise - no cavern cert needed, just OW. Its what is designated an OW safe cavern - has a thick line that runs to the exit, doesnt lead into a cave system. There are two sections to it, one is shallow to about 25ft that can be used to train or check things before moving into the cavern zone, on the other side of the cone is the cavern proper. It goes down to about 100ft to the reaper sign (where you stop) with two silty passages beyond which are not recommended for OW divers. You can still see the exit (on a day or good viz) from the sign and that is where the rope ends. Its a little tight down at that depth, but much larger above 60ft or so where most people spend most of their time! Wear two lights (one of those as a backup) and go in mentally prepared for the fact that you cant directly ascend - its almost 150-200ft back at the reaper sign, so not a quick exit. Its $30 cash only (maybe they take checks, cant recall, but no card transactions) for the day. It can be busy and with no other major springs open this last weekend and maybe this coming one, i wouldnt be surprised to find a lot of classes and other divers looking to use it - might get silty. Stay off the floor there is no flow in that sink and once the silt is stirred up it takes forever to drop out of the water again - this summer when i have been there the viz has been badly blown, in the winter it wasnt so bad, i could clearly see the exit from the sign (rather than a hazy glow through the sediment)! Its a nice spring to dive and gives you a good idea of cavern diving (i would also recommend a few other places to get an idea, some are light permitting, some are prohibited).

Last Sunday there had been only 2 other divers before me and my buddy got there. Vis the first 5 feet was said to be murky, but I thought it was ok, clear under that.

Although this is considered an ow diver safe cavern, I hate those, but can't stop people from doing it. IT IS STILL AN OVERHEAD! So please stay on or extremely close to the rope running in there. I didn't like the placement of the rope, and it was easy to loose it, cuz often it is above you near the ceiling.

Also I noticed this site has a lot of white clay and brittle limestone, so becareful where you kick and don't touch the walls.

Sorry i retract that, upon further reflection, i recall that they dont allow OW classes in the spring (at least basic OW) whereas the other sinks do - so actually its just people going in that cant stay off the bottom that help to stir the place up.

I guess my estimate that there would be larger crowds was based on it being one of the few springs open and that the numbers always seem to be up in the summer (when i have gone there anyway), worse on sunday than saturday though. IF you do get a nice day, the opening is a very pretty spectacle from 60-100ft down!

The line is there for a reason, to guide you out, and to reference and stay near it on the way in.

This might be our spring of choice this weekend, or Blue Grotto to do our remaining cavern skills that we couldnt show Rick last weekend, unless the state parks or others off the main rivers are open again (unlikely quite yet IMO).

info on paradise springs. thanks. Maybe I will
check it out this weekend. Or mabye Devil's Den.
