i went diving on sunday to a max depth of 58' breathing nitrox 32 within an elapsed time of 30 min or so. i felt great for two days until Tuesday morning when I noticed some mild pain around my heart when inhaling or exhaling. It only lasts for a breath or two, then goes away for a good while, sometimes several hours. I can inhale fully and hold it, no pain.

my question is could this be some form of AGE? It doesn't really fit the symptoms, and I didn't feel it for 2 days after the dive. I know I didn't hold my breath during ascent. I remember hearing an age would be felt within 10 min or so. It also could be unrelated to diving; however I just got a physical two weeks ago and checked out fine. Any ideas? I'll probably see a doctor soon but I thought I'd check with people with more dive experience than he probably has.

Sounds like you need to have this evaluated. Chest pain with breathing could be musculoskeletal, but could also be symptom of pneumothorax--not the same as AGE, but can be from the same mechanism--expansion of trapped gas in alveoli. If it were me, I'd be asking for a Chest xray.

Usual disclaimer--this is general recommendation, not a specific diagnosis, treatment, etc. etc.

I work for a sports orthopedic surgeon, and today at work he checked it out and said it was just costochondritis from pushups. phew :)
