I just got a pair of new split fins and was wondering if anyone else has gotten cramps on the tops of their feet while using these. I have never had this problem before with "not split fins".

Never.
I have a pair of Apollo's and a pair of Atomic's. You may be over working them. A simple tight flutter kick is all you need. Use the lower legs, it is fine.

Split fins are actually not suppose to give you cramps. That is one of the main reasons for them. You may be overextending yourself?

Anyone can get cramps with any fin if they are not conditioned to them. Even a split fin is leveraging your muscles in ways they are not accustomed to.

The quickest way I know to get past this is to go do some skin-diving between scuba dive days. Skindiving will let you wrack up significant mileage.

Stretches may also lower the risk.

Stretching really helps. My dad used to get cramps all the time w/o split fins so he would stretch before. But now with the split fins he is fine.

I think Splitlip probably hit it on the head...

I also have both Atomic and Apollo Bios. Going from paddles to splits, you don't have the sense of "torque" that you have with paddles, and as a result try to overcompensate with the force of the kick.

Let the fins do the work... they will... An easy soft flutter will get you going faster, and more consistently than you think... You'll get used to that seeming low end thrust not being there, however, in time, you'll find you're moving faster and with less effort...

Just a matter of "unlearning" what you're used to... and learning a different approach...

The entire reason I switched to splits was cramping... They simply went away with the splits...
