I will be in the Keys next weekend, March 14, and have a chance to dive the Spiegle Grove. Anyone been there recently? I'm interested in your reviews, especially current and Vis. Thanks.

I dive it about once a month. The conditions change daily, but you can expect a moderate current most of the time. The vis is typical SE FL in the 40-60 range but can drop or get better based on conditions.

The Grove is a great dive. The sand is 135, but the top reaches 50. Most people can spend the whole time at 100 and see plenty.

The ship is about 500 feet long and 85 feet wide and lays on its side. Light penetration is available depending on your experience.

Very cool wreck. You'll have to buy a medalion good for 2004 that will let you dive all the wrecks down there. It's $10.

Have a great dive. I was supposed to go down there tomorrow to dive the Duane, but the seas are forcast to be 7' so I bagged it.

Can you describe the different penetrations or is there a website describing them ?

I dove the Grove for the 1st time a few weeks ago. Vis was down and being my 1st time on the wreck, I'm not exactly sure where we were. We penetrated near the bow, horizontal penetration with several vertical escapes. Penetration was wider than tall, you could bang your tank if not careful.

Any idea where we were ?

You went in via a series of doors/hatches along the front of the superstructure on the main deck level. There are three grouped hatches toward the sand and three grouped hatches toward the top of the wreck seperated by about 20' between groupings. Since the wreck lies on it's side, you are right about the orientation of the entries (wider than tall). There are two higher deck levels as you swim horizontal - each with 4 openings. The hatches on these levels closest the sides of the ship are angled. If I'm not mistaken, the ones closest to the sand are not accessible. There were guidelines originally run to provide guided swim throughs from side to side, but because she sank on her side, they now will run you vertical to the sand. This wreck can be disorrienting in a low vis situation because of this. I recommend staying close to light depending on your experience level. Swimming in the cargo holds is cool. They give you a sense of the ships size and give you a big exit. :) I have about 12 dives on the ship and I am still checking out new things.

BTW, I'm not condoning penetration without proper training. :)

I did a couple dives on her the first week of February and it's an AMAZING dive. We were dropped on the stern and did a drift all the way down at about 100' which put us at ascent pressure as we reached the bow where our boat was to pick us up.

Spent a bit on the surface and back to the stern for another drop and drift up to the bow, this one was shallower, saw a couple octopii spatting over some turf up on the port side by the stern.

Vis was probably 50-60' and the current was .5 kt or so. Good dive, you'll like it ;)
