Can anyone suggest a great restaurant on Bonaire. My wife is turning 55 and I want someplace special to take her to dinner. Her favorites are French and Italian, but definitely not goat, etc. Price isn't a major factor for this one dinner (yes, I know Bonaire restaurants are expensive). We are going to be on island June 7-21. Thanks in advance for your help.

I made the same request last year for my wife's birthday and Richards was suggested. They have a table out on a private pier that was very romantic and special. We did have the additional fortune of having a fantastic view of a complete lunar eclipse while we were there.
Here are a few pictures of the table on the pier.

FYI: I found the Bonaire restaurants thread, which was helpful, but I would still like to know what people would suggest for the most special restaurant for a milestone birthday.

The view from the special table at Richards looks fantastic. How was the food? What do they specialize in?

Richards has a good mix of seafood and meat dishes with an emphasis on the seafood. Other places I would suggest are Bambu, It rains fishes, La Guernica and Rum Runners. Rum Runners have nice tables over the ocean and if you ask in advance you may get Floris to do you a special menu. We have avoided Cappricio for about 5 years as the level of service we have received appears to depend upon whether we were dining with people well known to them (wonderful service) or on our own several times (off hand and dismissive service).

My husband and I in Bonaire each year on his birthday (some milestone ones for sure) and are there every other year on our anniversary and our favorite celebration restaurant is Wil's Tropical Grill. Although not on the water there is a lovely courtyard and Wil is a true artist as a chef. The food is fabulous and presentation always lovely. We are constantly amazed and the number and variety of serving pieces Wil has to match his food. If you notify them several days before your special day they will make you a special meal from apps thru dessert or just a special dessert. Wil does some amazing pairings of tastes and textures ... a nice melding of Caribbean meets Continental. Service is wonderful and friendly. Last Feb we had some "foodie" friends with us and they declared Wil's food some of the best they have ever had. Can you tell I like it???

With the view, the overall experience, and the lunar eclipse, I can't remember much about the food, except that we both enjoyed it. It was well worth the cost for the ambiance and great service .. they give you a walkie talkie and mostly leave you alone until you call them :-)

We’ve been to Richard’s pier table two times (Feb 07 & Feb 08) and I want to say first that the tenderloin was absolutely delicious (I think we had it both times!)

The first year they gave us a 2-way radio for requesting service. They were very busy and took a while to get out to us, but we had the whole evening and were not in a rush. It was great.

It was so pleasant an evening that we reserved the pier table again for this year. This time they didn’t have the radio and again the staff was very rushed - no real problem, we have all evening and we’re on island time. Once the meal was served, we had to go to the main restaurant area and request service or hand signal to catch a server’s attention. No big deal, but an annoyance.

They had a small boat tied to the pier this year that banged against the pier every 10 – 15 seconds. That gave the whole pier a shake that became very annoying as the evening progressed. We mentioned to the server about the banging and she just said “Oh.” We didn’t stay too long after finishing our meal. So, 2007 was top-notch but we were a bit disappointed this year. The food was very good both years, but Richard’s is not inexpensive and we expected a higher level of service. We haven’t got it on our list of restaurants to go back to next year.

Just to let people know, it can get cool out on the pier and it’s windier than in the main restaurant – bring a light sweater or jacket just in case.
