Spearing

I posted this on a spearfishing board...but does anyone around here spear? I am interesting in getting an introduction to the sport and was wondering the best way to go about it. I was thinking of trying it on air first, cause I don't think I will make the best freediver.

There are lots of spearfishermen down here in RI. I am not one of them, but I know a bunch. They mostly hunt stripers (it is illegal to spear them in MA but not in RI) and tautog.

Dan over at Ocean State Scuba in Jamestown is a good person to talk to about it. He spends a ton of time spearfishing so he knows what he is talking about, and I know he was really trying to push an underwater hunting class he was doing last summer.

Narragansett Pier Dive Shop in Narragansett also really seems to cater to the speargun crowd. They host tournaments and occasionally speakers on the topic.

Are those competitions free or on air..or both? i would definitely be interested in an underwater hunting class

I think the best way to spear is strap on double 100's and head out from the shore to a mile off the coast (way out there) were I wont run into you.

As you probably sense I have had some scary moments being spear to nose with spearfishermen in the low vis RI waters.

I spear, but not with a spear gun. I use a 3' pole spear, and usually go after flounder.
