I'm looking to visit a friend in Warwick this weekend and thought I might bring my gear to try some spearfishing.
Any feedbacks on the following would be appreciated:
Any spots to try near the area? - shore diving that is
Are there even any fish? i'm guessing it would be togs?
How cold is the water? (2pc 7mm wetsuit sufficient?)
A drive to Newport will present several good spots to spearfish. The most popular site is Kings Beach. There's lots of divers there but if you don't mind swimming you can find places away from the crowds and find fish. Green Bridge cove (it's a bridge like a overpass on the highway) you can swim out to 3 large rock outcroppings I call them reefs but techinically thery're not. Lands End requires you park somewhere besides close to the water. You can drop you gear off, park then come back. You could check with the Coast Guard Station and ask if they'll let you enter the water in their cove. That will give you acess to one of the finest dive site in RI IMO Castle Hill.
The max depth is somewhere around 170fsw but there's no need to go that deep. It's basically a wall dive so the depth is your choice, I'd guess you'll chose the depth the fish are at!
Jamestown has a couple of good spots also as well as Narrgansett. Warwick is a little rough to find good spots as the vis sucks and accesses are few. PM me I might be pesuaded to dive this weekend. I've advoiding dive as I torn my rotator cuff but, it's feeling pretty good and I'm going in on the 4th for the op so one dive before I go sounds good to me. If you go bring a flag the DEM are looking to generate $$$ so they will fine you if you don't have one.
I don't know what about 7MM but I use a 1/4" Farmer style or a dry suit. The water is still in the 50+ degree range but this weekend the air is going to turn colder after T-Day. Yeah, togs maybe some cod also flounder too but check the season on those.
