So im headed to maui in under a month and I have been looking online for companies that do spearfishing trips.... but none to be found! Does anybody know why this is? To much liability? Illegal to spearfish???? Or do I just have to bring all my gear and go out and find something my self to shoot? Any information would help a ton! Thanks!!!

Spearfishing seems to be from shore or private boats. You could always rent a boat, or charter one of the fishing boats.

Lots of locals are out spearfishing, most with relatively simple equipment such as the simple pole spears and pole spears with an elastic band (aka Hawaiian Slings ??? )sold at K-Mart, WalMart, and Long's Drugs among many other places.

I don't have the rules handy, but you may be able to find them online on the Dept. of Land and Natural Resources website.

One thing I've heard is that you'll get some serious stink-eye (i.e. "upset the locals") if you're caught exiting the water with scuba gear and some catch.

It's thought here that the only "true" spearfishing is done whilst freediving.
