While on GC in August we drove out, saw lots of construction going on.

We were told that the hotel and dive shop would be reopening "next year".

Anyone in the know? Yes, I know it's ( not my words ) "on the dodgy end" of the island but DH and I have had some wonderful trips there and are anxious to see what the *new* Spanish Bay will be..

We are interested also. We have had wonderful trips there. It is our kind of resort. We just got back from Cozumel and are looking to go back to GCM or LC in the spring.

Spanish Bay Resort was everything a diver could want for a relaxing and fun vacation. My hubby and I loved the resort and its staff was absolutely terrific! The dive shop and dive masters and dive crew were tops and took us to quality dive spots. We keep looking to see if they will reopen - and certainly hope they do. PS: the sunsets were to absolutely beautiful.

why would someone call that "the dodgy end" of the island?

I thought I read someplace that it would be a much higher end place when it was done, I don't know if that was here, in some magazine, or where.

We felt very safe and secure the entire time we were there. Grand Caymen has very stiff penalties for crime of any type, and we did not observe any type of suspicious activity our entire 13 day stay. With that said, I know crime is present everywhere but I never felt the least bit afraid (even if I was sitting out on our veranda alone at night.) Considering some of the other dive locations we've stayed at (Belize, Cozumel, Roatan, Oahu, Maui, etc...) this one is still on the top of our list for wanting to return.
