My husband has a job opportunity at Patrick AFB/Cape Canaveral. Can anyone tell me about the area?

I did see a dive shop listed at Cocoa Beach so I thought that was encouraging.

Please no Major Nelson & Genie jokes (I've gotten those already!).

Thanks --Starfish

Welcome to the sunshine state ! I have family in the Melbourne area, about 45 min. south of Cocoa. This part of the Fl. coast is primarilly a surfing mecca, higher surf useally equals lower vis.
My nephews lobster this area, but head south to West Palm or the Keys for pleasure diving. WP is about 3hrs. and the Keys about 6hrs. south. However, you're fairly close to some great freshwater spring and cavern diving, with vis. like air. And you're not far from a very unique dive ( expensive ), the tank at the living seas at Epcot. Frankly, you've come to a GREAT state for diving, even if we can't quite get the voting thing down pat.
I'd suggest two publications, Deloaches(sp) Diving Fl. book and
Fl. Scuba News a mag. Also search this boards previous postings
there's a wealth of knowledge and opinions.
Again, WELCOME ABOARD !

I've lived here for about 4 years now, and I really like it here. We are about the same distance from the good diving in West Palm Beach/Ft. Lauderdale area as we are from the good diving in Florida's springs. The only bad part about living here is that the closest diving is at least an hour away. There are some beach dives near by, but they usually have bad vis.

Well it's official, we will be moving to the Sunshine State by January.

Where we are now is 5 hours to a dive site, so an hour seems like nothing.

TOld my DH [Darling husband; daring husband; dumb husband depending on contect ;) ] that I already know what I want for Christmas. . . my own tanks!

Starfish,

You have been given good information. I lived in Melbourne for 23 years and never did dive there. Although, there is very good lobstering and hunting there, I normally dive for pleasure and headed to WPB, Pompano, or the Keys. There are some really good areas along the East coast that do not require a drive all the way to the Keys.

Have fun, I miss Melbourne.

Some good places for you to dive that aren't far from the area you will be moving to are: Jupiter and West Palm (some nice drift diving with a range of depths) Pompano and Ft. Lauderdale. Jupiter is the closet being only maybe only 2 hours south and west palm is a few exits further down.

Glad you are moving south.
