when I attached and turned the valve open the gauge reads 3000psi but it has a hiss the air is coming from the (hole in the red square) and it stops when the pressure drops to about 26-2700 psi. is this normal for it to leak there? it seems to be holding at just over 2000psi

hmmm, I had it serviced last less than a year ago. when I asked here they told me it was a mk-5 and when it was serviced they said it was a mk-15..... Should I take it back to them to look at? The 2nd stage is a Sherwood but it does not appear to be leaking.

thanks, kinda stinks I was hoping to test this out in the pool on saturday and it turns out the shop that serviced them is only open 3pm-6pm today and tomorrow....

Sounds like the o-ring that seals the HP seat is leaking. It can only get worse and could happen rather quickly. The replacement of that o-ring (and maybe the seat) is reasonably quick & simple unless the shop insists on doing a "full service" of your reg & your wallet.

Pic isn't very good, but based on the diameter of the seat retainer, the adapter to the HP hose connection and the shiny chrome; it is an old Mk5. But problem & fix is similar for a Mk15.

It's definitely a Mk 5.

The round shaped thing on the back of the Mk 5 is the seat retainer and air leaking from the hole in the center would have to be going past the seat which sits in the seat retainer.

The Mk 5 and Mk 10 use a solid seat that sits in the retainer with a solid press fit with a washer or o-ring sitting on top of the seat where it contacts the body. The retainer itself is o-ring sealed when it is screwed into the regulator body.

The MK 15 uses a different seat design where the seat is o-ring sealed within the seat retainer itself.

It's possible it has Mk 5 parts, but I have never seen a leak like this occur and the rubber washer that seals the HP seat is an annually replaced part that is not normally subject to failure in service. The mis-identification as a MK 15 and the problem you describe make me suspect whoever serviced it is exploring new ground by installing a Mk 15 seat in a MK 5 carrier. Definitely get it serviced and definitely consider getting it serviced by someone else - or at least by someone who can correctly ID your regulator.

Scary thought. And the piston o-rings are the same size. Is that Mk5 seat retainer about the right ID to hold the Mk15 seat? I've never messed with a mk15. And I guess if you would put a Mk15 kit in a Mk5, you probably would not worry too much about changing the swivel o-ring.

I am half tempted to try putting a Mk 15 seat in a Mk 5 to see what happens...I bet it leaks. :D

Sorry for the poor pic its hard getting small objects with my camera. The shop I need to go to is 30 mins away already, I dont know where another would be to take it to get serviced.....My lds does not work on scubapro.
