Hello,
Been away for a bit but am back again.

For Christmas, I bought myself and SP-350 and PT-030. So far I've only used it in the pool for taking photos of students and video of swimming style for a critique tool.

I'm getting ready to take it to some saltwatter soon and am looking into a strobe.

I'm thinking of a Y&S-27DX. For those of you with vastly more experience than I, what do you think?

Alternatives?

If you can rather go for an Inon Z240 or a S&S YS 110 - they will not dissapoint you.

i just bought the YS-110 for my SP-350 and Oly housing from Ryan at ReefPhoto. while i have not taken any shots U/W, i will say that ALL of my shots on land have been great with this set-up. i have even went out of my way to try and take photo's that would usually turn out bad, only to have them look GREAT with this rig. OH, i went ahead and had the guys/gals at Reef put in the H/W conversion bulkhead so i could shoot TTL.....i am glad i did now!!

Here's a handy comparison page at DigitalDiver:
http://www.digitaldiver.net/strobes.php

I started out with a YS25DX strobe. It was well built, but too low powered. After 3 years, I added a second arm to my rig and bought a YS 25 Auto (it was a fairly good deal). The YS27 was a close second choice. The two strobes work quite well.

The YS27 is a good basic strobe. If you can afford a more powerful strobe you may want to budget for it. The Inon Z240 has a modeling light and that is a very distinct advantage, but a $350 advantage? You can always rig a holder for a small LED light such as a Princeton Tec Attitude.

Here's my Flickr page with photos taken with my single arm rig.

Attached are a couple of photos taken with the dual arm rig and some of the rig itself.
