I will be diving in Djibouti/Eritrea in Jan/Feb. It looks like not many of you have been that far south. But I am wondering if anyone has information on water temperatures, dive operators, quality and safety of rental gear there etc.

:help:

I have looked on a few websites, but would love a little first hand kowledge.

Thanks

I dove off the Sea Surveyor during the summer of 1995, leaving out of Masawa and diving islands off the coast of Yemen and the Seven Brothers for two weeks.

I can't help you with current dive operations there, but we encountered water temeratures in the low 90's - sometimes uncomfortably warm. Where we dove (NOT the Dahlaks), we encountered an incredible profusion of marine life with one notable exception - sharks. I recall only one diver reporting having seen one, but we did see a number of open fishing boats whose bottoms were covered with shark fins.

Well, at least I won't have to worry about hauling my wetsuit around over there.
Thanks for your help

Please mind that there will be big a difference in temperature in jan/feb compared to donachesons trip in the summer of 1995. I haven't been that far south, but several times to the Sudanese Red Sea, and my guess is that you will find water temperatures in the 26-27 C range in this region in this period.

good luck and please share your experience with us when you come back.
