Any recommendations on diving out of South Haven, MI? My wife and I are considering visiting there on a long weekend in Aug/Sep timeframe.

While there I'd like to get in a day of diving. I'd like to take a charter to a couple of novice/beginner wreck sites that are <=70 ffw or so. Not yet ready for anything more advanced than that. Recommendations for charters? Dive sites?

We are considering staying at the Yelton Manor B&B. It get absolutely rave reviews from what we can see. Anyone ever stay there or know anything about the place?

Oldpirate:
The Rockaway is a 70 foot dive, but there hasn't been much to see over the past few years. ( http://www.michiganshipwrecks.org/rockaway.htm )

The Verano ( http://www.michiganshipwrecks.org/verano.htm ) is also rather uninteresting, but is only in 50 feet of water.

The intereting wrecks are out deep, I'm afraid!

I do not believe there is a South haven based charter unless someone new has just stepped up to the plate.

Bummer. My wife was quite keen on going to S. Haven. Where in MI would you recommend for a new diver wanting to experience an entry level wreck or two? Can be either Lake Michigan or Huron. The closer to Indianapolis the better. Also, we are looking for a nice community where there is more to do than go diving since my wife is not a diver.

Everything we dive on in West Michigan is really a fairly deep wreck.

You can have some fun in Lake 16 in Allegan County. Dive shops have set up an "obstacle course" for diver training. It is cold, though.

There are some charters out of Northern Indiana. I've been with N'Pursuit and they go to a lot of fairly shallow wrecks: http://www.npursuitcharters.com/scuba_adven.html.

Maybe some of the lake Huron divers can chime in.

Get in touch with Chuck at Ocean Sands Scubs, 616-396-0068. Does charters out of Saugatuck (just up the road about 20 minutes from South Haven) and does great diving. Recommended.

Contact Wolf's Dive Shop in Benton Harbor. They don't charter but can put you in touch with divers and gear. Lake 16 is good but cold and cloudy this time of year. If you want to experience some GREAT Lakes diving (sorry for the punn), spend the time to go to Alpena MI. and the Thunder Bay underwater preserve. It is above the thumb in Lake Huron and has everything from beach wrecks to fully intact schooners at 160 ft. Wolf's can also put you in touch with a couple of local dive clubs. The MUD club and Diamond Divers.
