Hey, guys and gals! Super excited to be getting certified here in late March. I am located in SE Wisconsin and my end goal is to dive the wrecks in lake michigan.

Anyways, on to the question. In the e-learning it goes through the diver skills that will be in confined sessions and open water sessions. Is the CESA skill done in the pool or open water? It doesn't list it in the open water skills checklist, not in either of the 4 dive checklists for open water.

Thanks in advance!

Last time I was on a course (2015) it was done in both pool and ocean.

Thanks for the response!

I guess it really doesn't matter either way. I am just one of those people who likes to know exactly what I'll have to do, and when. So I can mentally prepare.

It's probably the only skill I am slightly concerned about. Not breathing for that long doesn't make me panic, but I just can't resist the urge to breath when I hit the 20-25second mark of making the AHHH sound when I practice on land or in the pool.

it will be less than that no worries. don't over focus on this skill.

handle mask clearing and removal and share air.

It's been 45 years since my OW training but logic would dictate that open water is the best place to practice CESA for reasons that should be obvious.

It won't take you much longer than that if at all to do the drill. Given the average ascent rate of 60 feet per minute even if they brought you as deep as 30 feet that's 30 seconds tops, and in an emergency situation you could double that ascent rate so you're talking 15 seconds from 30 feet to the surface.

Your urge to breathe at around the 25 second mark isn't unusual I just tried it and felt the same way. In actual practice when you're releasing compressed air from your lungs it's not as difficult because, well you've got all that air in your lungs even as it's being released so your body's oxygen supply is somewhat satisfied, if that makes sense. Practicing this at the kitchen table or in a shallow pool where there's little to no compressed air in your lungs is pointless (my opinion).

Hey, can I ask if you're taking your training through Aquatic Adventures in Brookfield? If so, it'll be done in the pool as far as I recall. Don't stress about it.

We got all worked up thinking it would be the hardest skill of all

Pop quiz: which is the toughest skill during Open Water training that sometimes prevent students from obtaining their diving certification (or at least requires them to go through part of the process again until they get there)?

My answer is in small grey upside down font below. Not saying it's THE answer but it's definitely in the top 3.
