sony mac and firewire

I need to connect a sony HDV-7ZU to a Macbook pro. The mac uses an 8-pine firewire cable and the sony uses a 6-pin cable. The 6-pin-to-9-pin adapter that I ordered got lost en route.

I tried the following:

I connected the mac through a 9-pin cable to an external storage device (smartstor ds4600). I connected the sony to the same storage device through a 6-pin cable. Unfortunately, I cannot seem to find a way to make the mac see the camera through this daisy chain.

Does anyone have a suggestion?
