Anyone read "Song for the Blue Ocean" by Carl Safina? All about the history and state our fisheries are in and the ocean environment in general. Excellent reading in my opinion. Would love to hear what anyone thought of the book. Another great one is "The Empty Ocean" by Richard Ellis. Tears me up to watch and hear about what's happening to life in the sea....

Yes I read this book. Personally prefered the 1st and the 3rd section. The 2nd section on the Salmon was a bit too detailed for the novice reader. Much of the information given in this book is also used in the fantastic Documentary the BLUE PLANET series which is a BBC/Discovery Channel production.
Unfortunately such books are NOT read by the decision makers especially in the Developing world who are pretty ignorant about these matters.

Good points Mufaddal. Yeah the BBC film (and book) are very entertaining and beautifully done but are more for entertainment than real education (as is Safina's book) I think. Also I think the developed world is primarily responsible for the majority of the fishing problems (US, Japan, etc.). The world of the Salmon was fascinating to me because I live here and never knew much of what he describes....

Hey I used to live in Sri Lanka, my very first snorkeling rxperience was in Trincomalee, beautiful. Do the Tigers control that area now? We lived outside Kandy in a village named Maha Kanda... 1980/81.
