Last week I was the bug. At least it wasen't too bad, I made a killer grab on a round label RAM, the case was a little rough in spots, but the hoses and mouthpiece were in fantastic condition. I was going to just do a rebuild on it, but decided that for what I paid, why not rechrome the cases? I split it open, to tear it down, only to discover that it was actually a DA in sheeps clothing! DAMN! For what I paid it was a bargain, but not the RAM I thought it was. The cases will be ready on Tuesday, and with the modifications I want to do to it, it will end up being a RAM anyway, but the moral of the story? Be careful when you get vintage gear, wether it's an honest mistake, or a straight up dirty deal. You can get slapped down with something that is not what you paid for, In my case, I still paid well below what going price for a DA would be. But if you get one on ebay, where the current prices are pretty much INSANE! You can get taken. Don't rely on a label for security!

Are you sure you have the shorter DA nozzle? Is it possible that someone just replaced the internal parts.

It will not work well (if at all) if the first stage parts form an Aqua Master and Royal Aqua Master are intermixed, but many have tried. A conversion requires the complete first stage body (nozzle) and all the internal parts to be replaced with matching parts. I have done conventions it in both directions, but it requires a complete conversion.

I think that many have mixed first stage parts from DA and RAM as a last resort due to lack of available replacement parts at times and perhaps at times by mistake.

Good luck

It appears that the entire main body may have been swapped out, but I can't be sure of that. If its that case, I believe that the wool has been pulled over more eyes than mine! I am in no way the reg specialist that you are though, but I think its a complete DA. There was a fair amount of verdi inside the case, leading me to believe that it was a loss at some point, and the body was a transplant? Are all the parts currently available to convert the body back to a RAM?

All the parts are available for a RAM since the first stage parts are the same as a Conshelf or Titan, etc.

The only replacement part we are missing for an Aqua Master is the first stage seat. That is one of the original reasons for the design of the Phoenix. Converting a DA into RAM guaranties replacement parts basically for as long as Aqua Lung is in business.

The DA Aqua Master first stage nozzle is about 0.98 inches long. The original RAM nozzle is a bout 1.09 inches long.

The best and easiest way to tell the difference between a DA and a RAM is by looking at the gap between the yoke and the main body. For a RAM the gap is about 1/10 of an inch. The DA basically has no gap (or very minimal).

Be careful, I purchased a DA from an "old Navy Master Diver" and it might have killed me had I not tested it fully. It had RAM parts in a DA nozzle in a deadly mix, air shut off at 1,000 psi rock solid, abiove that it breathed fine. It was still a good deal because the regulator was primo and came with a ton of er--RAM parts--shoulda been a dead (pun) give away. Now it is one of my favorites, converted to a RAM it is a champ.

Always inspect carefully any used dive gear, new or old.
