Hey guys,

I'm planning on taking a class and get certified. I currently live in Virginia, and I don't have any idea where to go!
If you guys can give me some idea or advice, I will really appreciate it! Thanks ;)

You have several options:
* You can do the entire course locally or near by- Open Water evaluations may be in a lake, quarry or possibly the Atlantic. Then take a trip & enjoy!:D
* You can do the Classroom & confined water (pool) locally & t hen get a referral to do the evaluations at a vacation destination. Then get in more dives after the evaluations are complete.:D
* You can do the entire course at the destination,... However, you'll have to do your studies & such while on vacation,... hence IMO the other 2 options are better.

As to where,... really depends on your budget & where you want to go....

The one thing I would advise you against doing is taking a 3 day course. Its a huge amount of material & skills to absorb & master. You want to be absolutely comfortable in your skills & knowledge before you get your certification.

Be sure to interview your propective instructors (interview more than 1). Get a feel for their teaching style & make sure it is compatable with your learning style. Find out all the details of the course- how much? When? Where? How many sessions? How long are the sessions? What equipment is supplied? What must you supply? What happens if you need extra work?..... There's more, I'm sure.

Welcome to the board.
Odds are you will do your open water (OW) training at Lake Rawlings which is about 70 miles from you - 35 miles north of the NC line on I-85. Once you get certified you can dive the quarry more, go to the coast, do trips to far off places or all of the above. There are a good many of us that travel to Rawlings to dive during the summer so don't be shy about coming on this board and looking for buddies.

Tammy,

thank you so much! Your post helps alot.
By the way, I'm from Indonesia. You really need to dive there sometime, it's so beautiful

I'm not sure what is available in Lynchburg, but I just did my Advanced Open Water and a Dry Suit class at a place called Lake Rawlings, VA. According to Google it is about 2 hours from you. It is a really good training site with lots of wrecks in the water, a planned underwater navigation course, and lots of platforms for doing skills. And of course there are shops in the Richmond area too that you could check out. Here is a shop that might be close to you...

Cha, I have never dove in Indonesia before, but have dove in Malaysia. If Indonesia is anything like Malaysia, it would certainly be worth the trip, for sure!

Herman,

Thank you! I will call them soon! do you dive there?

Not a lot but usually 3 or 4 times a year. We have a couple of quarries closer to us so we don't travel there often but anytime we are going, you are welcome to join us.

I've heard a lot from american that Bali, Indonesia has the most beautiful beach and sea in south east Asia! If you are planning to go there, let me know! I will probably be able to show you around
