not as much bad luck as bad chemical reactions. commercial fruit growers pick fruit unripe so that they are ripe by the time they get to market. some bright lightbulb decided to ship bananas with the rest of the fruit and the bananas give off some gas that quickly ripens and the spoils the rest of the fruit. hence banana boats. only bananas are shipped with other bananas. well, that's what i've read anyway...
