Looking for anyone with firsthand experience staying at Uepi Resort in the Solomon Islands. How was location, food, snorkeling, bugs(?), etc.

Thanks!

No first hand experience but I met a diver from Germany this past summer who raved about Uepi. We were diving northern PNG from the Golden Dawn, so he had seen some other decent diving.

Eric Cheng from wetpixel wrote a comprehensive trip report which included a trip on the Bilikiki and some days at Uepi. You can find his report here: Solomons trip report

Hi Pete, hubby & I travel to Uepi twice each year now. After diving various areas of the Solomons for many years, we've decided that Uepi is by far the best. I've read Eric Cheng's comments and while I do agree with some of his slightly negative comments, at least to some extent, all you need do at Uepi, is ask for what you want or need. Jill & Grant, plus their wonderful staff, really just want to please everyone - without regimenting them , or making them feel overly "organised".

I am also a photograher and asked for a fish tub so that I could take it to my room and use it for soaking the camera - it wasn't a problem - I asked and came back from the dive to find it next to my front door, full of fresh water. too easy! Staff are not mind readers but really want to please.

As for walking distance to rooms, it's really a personal thing - we like a room closer to the dive shop, while we have friends who always insist on cabin 6, the furthest away. They reckon the extra walk is well compensated by the extra privacy and the stunning view.

As for the food at Uepi - well, don't even consider going unless you can eat large amounts of lobster, crab, fresh fish and very tasty local vegies and fruits.....and then there's the home made ice cream.......

guess I don't need to comment too much on the marine life around Uepi - whether diving or snorkelling, you have a good chance of seeing it all. And it's all so very easy, whether from the shore or from the dive boat.

As for "bugs" I guess you mean malaria mozzies - Uepi does not seem to have any of the nasty ones, probably because it has such a small number of people there at any one time. Certainly, we've never used any anti malaria medication and have never had a problem. When you're travelling through Honiara, care should be taken though, especially on the evening or early morning flights. I carry a small roll on repellant in my hand luggage and smear a lot on before getting off the international flight.

Pete, I don't think you will find a more beautiful spot than Uepi, it's remote, stunningly beautiful and very unspoilt. There is no hot water, air conditioning or TV - it's just it's natural and very special self.

For me, there is no more special place in the world. If I could stay there forever, I would go in a flash.
