that is an interesting way to look at it and you are right in that new things whatever industry you are in are always learned because people do things outside the norm, doesnt mean is till agree with it.

So why is it total BS? Every aspect of diving involves risk managment. All dive training came about from people messing up and learing from their mistakes and bringing that information to others. Solo training addresses the large number of divers who are doing it anyway for whatever reason and sometimes there are accidents. If TDI had the foresight to train people to do it in a safer manner, why would it be BS? Cave diving has a terrible safety record if you include everyone who has perished in a cave but there is training in place to REDUCE the risk.
If we all dive the same way using the same kit, doing the same things this sport will stagnate.

cheers,

... Quoted threat removed ....
:17: Now that just plain hurts..

If this has been already discussed I apologise but whats the point of using thirds for gas management if yer diving solo?

Is it really that hard to understand?

1/3 going in
1/3 comming out
1/3 for problem solving

I am NOT advocating solo diving but some of these 'questions' are really a bit silly.

I think most of us understand that the drive to the dive site is more dangerous than the dive.

How many of us buddy drive?
How many solo drive?

We nearly always accept solo in the more dangerous activity but not in the safer activity.

Solo diving (recreational and rec/tec) is generally not the best solution but "for some people" it is a useful solution.

I understand your point, but it's a poor analogy, since driving with a buddy doesn't have any particularly beneficial effects and one can still live while driving if we have an OOG emergency.

cheers,

I asked the question first. LOL

How does this class prepare a diver for solo diving?

I keep hearing this. I just don't believe it. I've driven up around 2 million or more miles over 30 years in all conditions and I haven't got so much as a scratch. I don't even personally know any one who has died or even been seriously injured in a car.

I know far more people who drive than dive yet I know more people who have been seriously injured diving than driving. That's not statistics just observation.

Here's some more. Even though I've spent thousands of times more time on the road than diving I've never had to rescue a single driver from a life threatening situation although I've rescued several divers.

If your car completely fails you can get out and walk. No life support equipment is required. If you get confused you can pull over and sit and think for as long as it takes. Not so with diving. When diving if you screw up the amount of time you have to recover is = to the amount of time you can go without something to breath...if you're lucky.

I'd be willing to say that when driving just as when flying that a co-pilot could add to safety.

I don't need a PUNK like you to tell me anything about diving

O-Ring, is that you or me?

Novadiver, if it's directed at me, mellow out man. I thought you started this thread asking for opinions. I gave mine.

Thats great luck Mike, i hope it holds for you. I haven't been that lucky. I personally know many more people killed and injured driving than diving.

Driving, you have no control of the boneheads on the roads with you. If you believe that isn't an issue you need to visit my home town in the summer. It's crazy just trying to get to work.

One more degree of (accident) freedom we have no control of around here is deer. I've personally hit three, been in anothers vehicle for two more. Thats five accidents alone that could have been fatal.

I haven't come anywhere near that close to buying it when diving buddied up or solo. So from my observation, at least in this neck of the woods, driving is much more dangerous.

To everyone else, i think the point of both sides have been made pretty well. Lets try a chill pill on aggravating the other side okay?
