A 56-year-old man died in Mosman Park on Friday night after he failed to resurface from the water during an evening dive.

Police say the man went into the water for a dive just before 7.30pm near Coombe Reserve in Mosman Park.

His wife called emergency services when he failed to surface.

Police divers conducted a search of the area and about 11.25pm they found the man unresponsive near the Mosman Bay jetty.

He was unable to be revived.

Police will prepare a report for the Coroner.
