I've checked the search engine and received no matches. Does anyone on the board dive solo? Be honest.

I have. Underwater photography mostly.

I have over 800 dives in all kinds of condition and feel safe in doing so. I'm very aware of my surroundings and keep my gear in top shape. Solo diving also creates less of a disturbance to my subjects.

Thanks, Ken:boom:

The "solo diving" argument goes 'round and 'round, but it comes down to this:
When you dive solo you are betting your life that
(1) You will not suffer any kind of debilitating event that would prevent you from returning to the surface under your own power.
(2) You will not get entangled or entrapped in such a way that you can't get back to the surface on your own.
As long as you understand the bet, play the game.

Hey luvdiving !
In answer to your question on solo diving.
Of course ! and so have many of my buddies and many others that I dive with occasionally. Ask any instructor who has led a dive with students with no assistant present and I'll bet they will all agree that they are solo diving. I am for solo diving with the proper training.
And as Rick said, you are making a bet. Don't bet if the cards aren't right.

By the way Rick, did you used to run a shop in Dothan ?
Divers Den ?

Happy diving !

Nope... the only Dothan shop I've ever been to was on the South side of town on 231 and I don't recall the name - they had their own covered pool. We just stopped there for some gas on the way to Jackson Blue.

Yes I dive Solo and so do many other divers I know.
It all comes down to training, equipment and confidence in your abilities. When in question ..DON’T ! You must be sure this is for you. You must have the common sense to call the dive or better said, not dive solo, unless the conditions at the time of the dive are well with in your abilities. I find diving solo frees me from worrying about where my buddy is and lets me better enjoy my dive. This is not to say that I don’t enjoy diving with others
because I do like the company.. Some will tell you that diving solo is taking your life into your own hands.
I say, where else should it be ?

I'm still a newbie, so maybe I'll change my mind later, but...

This is what I think:
Diving is already risky. I am willing to take that risk. But, I don't have to make it even more risky by diving solo, or diving beyond my limits. At this point, I just don't see the benefit in doing so, versus the risk involved. I don't think I would even enjoy it as much without someone to share the experience with. I believe in being as safe as possible while enjoying the thrill of doing something exciting and somewhat dangerous. Not that you want to know this about me, but...I have been in a car accident without seat belts (before anybody wore them) and busted the windshield with my face. Not pretty! I am forever scarred; literally. Now, I wear my seatbelt. I don't want to repeat the experience. I don't however, wish I could go back and have it never happen. It's just one of life's little adventures. I do, however believe in preventing it from happening again if I can. It's the same way with diving. I want to enjoy it for a long time, so I will do what I can to remain safe and not jeapardize my ability to dive in the future.

I read something recently about one of the agencies (PADI, maybe?) considering a solo certification. Anyone heard about that?

My usual scenario is the "loose deuce" configuration. Your buddy is as far away as conditions allow. Sometimes as far as 40 or 50 feet away. It is all what you are comfortable with.

I have done a little solo diving. Every time has been at a spot I knew well.
