I find that on a liveaboard if I give them my solo card when they collect cards at the beginning of a trip there is just no issue about me going off on my own. Don't make a big deal of it, don't ask permission, but just don't bother buddying up. So far no issues.

There are operators who insist on a card. Some places in the world simply won't let you dive solo off a comercial operation without one. GBR comes to mind.

Other than that not much use for it.

I did find the course useful in the sense of a rationality check. A second opinion from someone whose opinion I value that I wasn't being particularly over confident or stupid.
