Redcar beach scuba diver dies - Gazette Live
BBC News - Diver, 72, dies after Redcar sea rescue
A man has died after attempts were made to rescue him off the coast at Redcar this afternoon. The RNLI lifeboat was launched at around 1pm today amid reports of a diver in difficulties in the water.
A spokesman for the Coastguard said: "We were called to Redcar Beach at 12.56pm to reports of a diver in the water. The lifeboat was launched."
A spokesman for Cleveland Police confirmed the scuba diver had subsequently died.
"At 1.36pm today police were called to the sea near the lifeboat station in Redcar where a man had been scuba diving and was found in the water," he said.
"He was taken to the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough where he was pronounced dead. Inquiries are ongoing."
Elaine Dadd, from Dormanstown, was walking along the beach with her partner Harry Froom, when they saw the boat being launched.
Mr Froom told the Gazette: "We could see there was a boat about 100 yards out to sea and it looked either anchored or stuck and then it drifted back towards the shore and was around five to ten yards away from shore.
"Then we noticed the lifeboat being launched. It went to where the boat had been originally and it looked as if someone had been in the water and they picked them up and brought them back to shore."
Dave Cocks, from Redcar RNLI, said: We were called to an incident at around 1pm when someone raised the alarm with concerns about a man scuba diving off Redcar.
"The crews found the man, quite quickly, face down and wearing all of his scuba gear.
The volunteers got him into the boat and carried out CPR while taking him ashore. Paramedics were on scene but sadly, they were unable to resuscitate the gentleman.
I would like to praise the efforts of all the volunteers who reacted quickly and professionally, sadly to no avail.
BBC News - Diver, 72, dies after Redcar sea rescue
The 72-year-old man was pulled from the sea after being found face down in the water off Redcar on Monday afternoon.
The crew of Redcar inshore lifeboat gave him first aid on board and then at the station when they returned to shore until paramedics arrived.
He was taken to Middlesbrough's James Cook University Hospital where he was pronounced dead, Cleveland Police said.
Dave Cocks, from Redcar RNLI, said they were alerted by the Coastguard shortly after 13:00 BST after someone in the boat from which the man had been diving reported he was in difficulty.
He said: "The lifeboat very quickly found a diver, a gentleman, face down in the sea, got him into the lifeboat and immediately began CPR, brought him back to the lifeboat station where the CPR was continued until paramedics arrived and then the paramedics took over the treatment of the casualty.
"But sadly we have since learned that the gentleman has died."
Mr Cocks said the man was diving on his own with another person in the boat.
