I do it from my boat quite a bit on the lakes in central Washington. The main thing is having good anchor gear in case the wind picks up. I use a type called a Bruce anchor. Here is a link to give you an idea of how well these anchors hold.

I use mine to hold my boat in high flow rivers salmon fishing with no problem. I use the 11# anchor with 15' of 1/4" chain to hold a 20' inboard jet boat. When I dive solo and leave the boat unattended, I hang a line over the side with 4" snap hook on one end. Then I just inflated my BC and remove it, clip it into the line and climb back onboard. That way I don't have to worry about having a wreck with no one around to help get back up....
