Hi everyone. My boyfriend and I will be traveling to Utila in March. He's never been SCUBA diving and I've only dived 8 times (with all dives happening at less than 60 feet in Cozumel). Since I'd like to become more knowledgeable about SCUBA (and become a safer diver in general) I want to get certified during this trip. Does anyone have any suggestions for dive companies in Utila that are definitely good with newbies in terms of being sticklers with safety rules and watching out for the unexpected? I perforated my eardrum a couple of years ago on a dive where the DM rushed down with some more experienced divers. Although I suspect I should have kept my own pace during the descent, I'd like to find a center in Utila to get certified with patient and attentive DMs that are accustomed to training newbies.

Thanks! Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Hi

One thing I would suggest, you may have already done it, check with your doctor that you will be ok for diving, also get a letter from him stating that you are ok to dive.

The reason for this is that if you wish to take any courses i.e. advanced you will have to fill in a medical and without your own doctors clearance you will have to visit a doctor here, but not only for that check with your doc....I do not know if you have been diving after that incident
