I don't want to "pile on" in regard to the recent threads about corrupt cops or safety risks in Cozumel, but thought that some may be interested in this information from Undercurrent.......

"In our October issue, we shared a reader’s report about suspicious charges at Budget Car Rental in Bonaire, and stressed the importance of buying collision-damage insurance when renting a car abroad. Now another shady car scam has surfaced in Cozumel, says Undercurrent subscriber Rick Feig (Baton Rouge, LA).

“I rented a small Chevy from the Sol y Mar rental company located directly in front of the El Cid - La Ceiba beach hotel. Upon returning the car, I discovered a small hole on the left tail light, obviously made by a small nail and a hammer, or a 1/8-inch drill bit, that destroyed the entire lens. The car had been parked overnight at the hotel’s parking lot, about 20 yards from Sol y Mar.

“Having just read the October issue of Undercurrent, I had purchased insurance at the time of rental, but I wasn’t surprised when Roger, the counter clerk, said the hole in the tail light was not covered, and I would have to pay him U.S. $60 in cash for the damage. I told him to just put it on the bill and I would take it up with the rental car company, but Roger said he couldn’t do that as all ‘small’ damages had to be paid in cash. After a heated discussion, I finally gave him $40 just to close the problem.”

Don't know if it is the same car rental company that was there when we used to stay at La Ceiba, but I had some issues with the car rental place in front of La Ceiba also a couple of years back.

When we returned the car he tried to charge me for a tank of gas (and wanted cash by the way), when I had just filled it up, but the gauges on the thing weren't working properly and the gas guage wouldn't go over a 1/4 of a tank. Things got ugly before he finally got the message he wasn't getting another dime out of me. I think he finally backed down when I said "call the police, we'll get them to settle it."

I rent from Less-Pay now, not the most "in shape" vehicles in town, but they run and the price is right, $60/day including full insurance.

If you are in the La Ceiba/ International Pier area and don't want to go to town, I have also rented from Marlin at the Pier terminal with no problems, but he is a little higher than Less-Pay who are located near Hotel Baracuda & Rock 'n' Java.

I rent from Isis where you can get a VW convertible for $35/day including insurance. When I rent a car in Coz I don't want a spiffy new one where the slightest scratch stands out.

It is prudent whenever you rent a car anywhere to do a walkaround with an employee of the rental company and get a waiver in writing for any preexisting damage.

We rented a VW half convertible from them when we were in Coz this past Nov.Same price. Good deal. We also rented a car from them over in Playa , same trip, when we were going to meet the potter on the road to Coba. This time, we got a little 4-door Chevy for about 47.00 dollars a day insurance incl. Cars were dependable and Isis was easy to work with. Will definitely use them again.

I've never bought car insurance in Coz (express horror now!). We've never had to pay any extra although on our last trip, we had some hassle about some supposedly new dings in the car. This time, as the rental guy went around marking everything on his sheet, I took digital photos with our camera. There may be no connection, but there was no debate when I returned the car. We rented with Ace (Executive) for about $30/day. I had booked a small automatic but was given a jeep. I'd take the small automatic over that any day. But what the hey....

EXCELLENT idea! And I usually have a Canon SD550 with me anyway.

Thanks Marg
