Hi all!! Well I need some weights for a bcd recently purchased (Im still getting gear together to stop renting

). It takes soft weights. My question is, wal-mart (and probably other stores ) have weight belts with soft weight inserts. They look exactly like diving weights but less expensive. Whats the difference? Construction, ect? I love saving money but not if the weight bags come apart. Thanks to all!!

Softweight as lead shots in some tough mesh bag? If so, as long as it is lead, and the mesh is tough enough, it should be OK.

yea, shot in a bag. I just was curious if the time in the water would need a different bag- sewing style. Thanks!

I did some dives with soft weight and didn't feel a difference!
As long if it's lead, in a good quality mesh bag and the weight is the same, you won't feel a difference.
Fits great inside the bcd pocket, if your bcd doesn't have special weight pockets.

the manufacturer requires soft, and i guess i can see the point, less wear cutting on the bc. Think ill go by walmart and see if they still have any, i think they were on sale too!

Steel shot will rust.

Time to spring for real weights, from lead. Check Craigslist for used, since shipping kills any bargains you might find on ebay.

Soft weights for diving are usually a "coated" lead shot in either a tough mesh bag or soft neoprene. The lead shot is usually coated to help prevent staining. That's the price difference. B

The softer mesh bags have a tendency to slip out of the integrated weight holders in the back of a bc...Especially if it's lighter weights; 1-2-3lbs......The courser mesh won't do that.....
