What is "in season" at Socorro in late May/early June. Mantas? sharks? baitballs? whales or whale sharks? Dolphins? How is the vis? Just want to get an idea . .

Thanks

Guy

This is what we say about the Socorro dive season:

November to May reflects the Socorro liveaboard safari season. The winter months of late January to early April are the best times to see humpback whales. This is when water temperatures are at their lowest (21 to 23°C). Outside of this time it is likely to be warmer (23 to 26"C) and a better time for manta rays and sharks. This is roughly the November to early January period and most of April and May.

Visibility, which on average is very good, varies from time to time and place to place. Wind, rain, current and tide can all play their part is affecting visibility. Sometimes in November and December the visibility can drop from the average of 30m to around 15-20m, although this tends to be only at a few dive sites. Being open ocean, surface conditions are variable. There are often quite sheltered mooring spots around the islands but the seas can be choppy during crossings.

So late May/June is right at the very end of the season. You will see that most of the boats dont visit Socorro in June if you check the Mexico liveaboard schedules

Only Nautilus Explorer does. So you might want to bring your plans forward a little. Let me know here or by PM if I can be any further help.

Cheers

I was there in late May this year on the Nautilus Explorer. Diving was anywhere between totally sucky and awesome. We had one dive at Roca Partida that was totally out of this world. Baitballs, LOTS of sharks (spotted at least 6 different species), jacks, tuna, barracudas, you name it. In general Roca Partida was very good, but you have to find the right balance between keeping the reef in sight and getting banged against it by surge and currents. We had one very good dive at San Benedicto (the Boiler) with a giant manta ray, the rest were ho-hum at best. Socorro itself cannot be avoided (the boat has to check in with the Coast Guard), but is a total bummer as far as diving is concerned.

I have posted some video here. First try with a GoPro, rather shaky, but you'll get the idea.
