I'm trying to get info for an upcoming trip to SoCal.

I know that whenever I head to Monterey, I can get a good guess at conditions by checking the wave model online, determining the predicted/actual wave heights, interval, direction, etc. and using that info to guage how the diving'll be. I'm wondering if there is a similiar wave model for SoCal, and if so, where can I go to check it out?

I'm also curious about good websites showing dive sites along the coast, especially if they have good descriptions of the underwater topography, beach type, access, and driving directions.

Thanks. Any info is appreciated.

I live and dive in Orange County so I use the following:

http://cdip.ucsd.edu/models/cc.wave.model.shtml
http://cdip.ucsd.edu/models/socal_now.shtml
http://lagunaseasports.com/conditions/conditions.asp

and the dive reports that are submitted on a regular basis by subscribers to the listserv at www.orange.divebums.com.

Where are you planning to visit? LA? OC? SD? It makes a difference for some of the sources, but not all. You came to the right place for advice. There are very helpful divers here!

Thanks. These should help out a lot. I noticed links to Chuck Tribolet's page, which is the model I'm used to looking at. Nice to see there are models for every section of Cali in a format I'm already familiar with interpeting.

To answer your question, I'm coming down to visit some diving friends, and possibly interview for a job in the L.A. area. I'm hoping to do some diving down in San Diego as well, since I've been dreaming about the Yukon for a while now, and never had the chance to make it that far south on my previous Cali adventures. Guess you could say I'm addicted to Monterey diving, and of course cold northern diving, but I'm hoping to change all that.

I'm sure my SoCal friends will chime in when they see me posting here...

Welcome to the board Coo's Toe.

So when are you planning on visiting out here? Right now we have lots of rain.Something I am sure you are use too. Hopefully when you come out we can be sunny Cali again.

Ana

I'll have some kind of schedule put together soon. I do hope to see some sunshine while I'm there, and maybe show up for one of those "wrinkles" dives I keep hearing about.

I've always wanted to give warm water diving a try... LA sounds like a good place to start. :54:

You're kidding, right?

We dive here with 7mms and hooded vests or dry suits. This may not be Monterey or Washington State, but it is NOT the tropics by a giant stride. Plan on water temps in the mid 50s if you're arriving in the next month or two!

Oh yes! That was meant as a joke for the couple of people here that know me and want me to head down to visit...

Considering your wintertime temps are almost a full 10 degrees warmer than ours up here, it is sort of like what I'd call warm water diving. Just don't think that I'm picturing Fiji temps or anything, I will be bringing appropriate exposure protection when I plan on diving in SoCal.
