Welcome neighbor.
Drop down to the SoCal section and give a shout out if you have not already done so.
The BCD you have selected is good. But if I may suggest the DSS Backplate Wing. I recently converted and there are definite advantages to a stainless steel 6 pound backplate that holds your tank rock steady as a part of your body instead of a BCD that allows your tank (and BCD) to shift a bit. Cost is comparable too. Talk to your local dive shop or give Tobin George at Deep Sea Supply a call. DSS is the MFG and local (Pasadena) with some great gear. If you ask Tobin, I bet he would let you try one.
Steel 100, good choice, a tad shorter than an AL80 and weighs the same, but gives you 20 CF more air. The buoyancy characteristics are good too.
Now about diving, I have been known to go diving a time or two (a week) and a PM to me will get you wet. We live close could potentially car pool. A post in the SoCAL section here will also get you wet most days
