OK, OK, I know Roatan is a dive destination but is there good snorkeling accessed by boat and/or shore?

My other half dives but I only snorkel, and many of the resort descriptions say snorkelers are welcome on the dive boats. In fact some have snorkel packages. But I wonder how deep a snorkeler has to go to see stuff. I'm new and not really into freediving but love to snorkel.

Also is there good shore snorkeling from some of the south side resorts, ie. Coco View, Reef House, compared to the north side, which looks like it has more reef but also more wind and waves?

Roatan is just one of a few places we're looking at and just wondering what my snorkel option are there. Thanks for helping a non-diver....

There is snorkling, no question...can't give you details becuase I was only around the Reef House Resort, but you might want to have a high visabily snorlking vest on. Just a suggestion, there can be local boat traffic out and about the coast area.

CoCoView hosts a two week program for a high end travel guide/snorkel maven that brings 10-18 hard-core tube users every year.

I dive and rarely leave the 20fsw area, much of my time is spent in 4 and 5 feet of water.

CCV = Snorkeling

Cocoview has amazing snorkeling. On my last dive trip there someone in our group skipped a deco stop..he claims watch malfuntioned this is another story, anyway...he was forced to sit out for 24 hrs and him and his girlfriend snorkled and loved it..they said it was some of the best snorkeling they have seen...And it is all right in front of you, no boat necessary, but I do know they were on the boat with us to a reef for snorkeling so I know they let you on the boats...Happy snorkeling!! Maybe you can take a scuba class while you are there....and the you get to blow bubbles...

Thanks for the all the tips. Coco View is actually what we're looking at for next summer. Looks great and they say they allow snorkelers on the boat so that's a plus. I can't dive due to some ear issues but I still enjoy the water from the top.

There was fantastic snorkeling off West Bay beach. We stayed at Foster's West Bay two years ago. It is also the most beautiful beach on the island.

I highly recommend snorkling off of West Bay Beach. The water was very calm (at least when we were there in August). And the beach is beautiful.

We went this past July and my son and I dive but my wife snorkels, so she went with us on every boat trip and she loved it very much.I joined her snorkeling on the west bay beach and this was a fantastic spot, I was able to show her turtles and even small rays, it was a great island to snorkel and you will be very happy.

I thought that the reef located in Halfmoon Bay, Westend Village was very easily accessible and sheltered- My wife, myself and my 7 year old daughter spent many an amazing hour exploring there. The bottom was on average about 5 to 15 ft deep so everything could be seen from the surface with a mask and snorkel. I towed my daughter around on an infatable mattress, we had a ball!! The reef starts fairly close to shore-and basically gets progressively more interesting and challenging as you move farther out to sea. A perfect introduction to diving for my little one.
