Snorkeling 1st time off of a boat

My point about the tip was that if you ask the person running the boat to do extra to help assuage your fears, you should consider tipping them at the end for doing extra for you.

These boats often have a mixture of new and experienced snorkelers. While the workers hopefully make sure the experienced ones are on the boat before it leaves, they will now know ahead of time who the new and scared ones are unless they mention it. Good boat operators will ask that on the way out, but you never know. Even if they do ask, it won't hurt to remind them of your nerves and that you hope they keep an extra eye on you.
 
It's my 1st time snorkeling off of a boat. How far do you snorkel away from the boat distance wise. I also have this fear I will get left behind
How far from shore will you be?

Stay within earshot of the boat unless you feel comfortable swimming to shore.
