I like snorkels for long surface swims.
“Save that precious air for your dive, don't waste it on a surface swim” is what we were told. I was taught to have a snorkel on my mask for the environment we were trained in, shore diving and entries-exits in active water, crawling over kelp, long surface swims, etc.
Finning on your back is comfy but it’s easy to get your tank valve hung up on kelp and feather boa. Snorkeling on the surface belly down is less entangling plus you can see where you’re going. Snorkeling on the surface just makes sense where I dive.
