The poll is flawed . . . There are two equally true answers for me. A snorkel does not represent a "risk" for my type of diving. One cannot be worn ON the mask without potentially impeding donation of a long hose, but one can certainly be carried other ways. I simply haven't found a reason to have one.
When I did, I was always grabbing it instead of my inflator. When I tried to swim with one in rough water, the waves splashed over the top of it, and I inhaled water anyway. And a snorkel for somebody who's anxious -- Please! Snorkels increase your dead space and require a higher minute ventilation to begin with, and that's just going to make somebody who's already anxious much worse. Far better to use a regulator, which does NOT increase dead space.
I have a friend who insisted on keeping his, because he begrudged any gas he used on the surface. This was because he had such a high gas consumption underwater that his dives were never long enough for him. The solution wasn't a snorkel -- It was better technique, leading to decreased gas consumption.
