We heard the arguments from the big guns on the thread... Now we find out how the average joe/jane feels.

Hummm, did you mean to make this a poll? If you did, it didn't work. As far as the "average Joe" and snorkels, I hate them. They are great .... if you're a snorkeler. Kinda required for that. As far as for Scuba, I never wear one. I don't like it flopping around on the side of my head and snagging on stuff. I don't at all care if others wear them. To each his/her own. Personally, I don't use one.

Ahhh, now it's a poll! I voted.

I pretty much find them useless for my average dive ie. middle of Lake Erie, down the line, up the line. I float on my back on the surface anyway. But I do carry one in my dive bag just in case I find a reason for it.

Diver Dennis:
How about, "Although some people like them and I respect their decision to use one, I don't like them and don't use one."?

Stop being a troll :D

No one has EVER accused me of being average, but I voted anyway.

I do not use a snorkel for the following reasons:

1. Sea lions love to steal them

2. When I squueze into tight places to film, they invariably get in the way.

If I'm required to carry one (as in Laguna Beach), I will. I have nothing against them other than the above points.

I just started scuba diving, but I've been snorkeling in the ocean my entire life, so I'm quite used to it. I'd rather have it than not have it.:)

The poll is flawed . . . There are two equally true answers for me. A snorkel does not represent a "risk" for my type of diving. One cannot be worn ON the mask without potentially impeding donation of a long hose, but one can certainly be carried other ways. I simply haven't found a reason to have one.

When I did, I was always grabbing it instead of my inflator. When I tried to swim with one in rough water, the waves splashed over the top of it, and I inhaled water anyway. And a snorkel for somebody who's anxious -- Please! Snorkels increase your dead space and require a higher minute ventilation to begin with, and that's just going to make somebody who's already anxious much worse. Far better to use a regulator, which does NOT increase dead space.

I have a friend who insisted on keeping his, because he begrudged any gas he used on the surface. This was because he had such a high gas consumption underwater that his dives were never long enough for him. The solution wasn't a snorkel -- It was better technique, leading to decreased gas consumption.
