Do any of you instructors out there have a current set of PADI standards as they relate to the use of a snorkel while diving? I would appreciate a direct cut-and-paste verbatim reply. Please understand I am not interested in discussing or debate the virtues of a snorkel, but rather am temporarily without an instructor manual and in need of a speedy resolution to a snorkel dillema this weekend.
Thanx!

PADI:
EQuIPMENT REQuIREMENTS
1. During all open water training dives, each student diver,
certified assistant and instructor must have:
a. fins, mask and snorkel (Although recommended, Ice Diver,
Wreck Diver and Cavern Diver Specialty course students are
not required to have snorkels.)
b. compressed gas cylinder and valve
c. buoyancy control device (bCD) (with tank mount or separate
backpack) and low pressure inflator
d. regulator and alternate air source
e. submersible pressure gauge (monitoring device)
f. depth gauge (monitoring device)
g. weight system and weights (if necessary for neutral buoyancy)
h. adequate exposure protection appropriate for local diving conditions
i. at least one audible emergency surface signaling device
(whistle, air horn, etc.)
2. During all open water training dives, instructors and certified assistants
must also have a timing device, compass, knife/diver’s tool (except
where prohibited by law or local regulations) and two surface signaling
devices – one audible (whistle, air horn, etc.) and one visible (inflatable
surface tube, flare, signal mirror, etc.).
3. use a dive flag where required by local law. Consider using a surface
support station with a dive flag.
There ya go. Tried to clean it up but between SB's software and PADI's disk this is as good as it gets.

In case it’s not apparent to all readers, PADI’s dictum is to have a snorkel. It doesn’t say anything about how to wear or stow it, or whether to use it. Also, it relates to training, not necessarily to all diving.

It doesn't say you have to wear the fins, just have them.:D

What PADI has to say about "having" a snorkel doesn't have anything to do with the real world. There are no "laws" which state that one has to use a snorkel while scuba diving. I have had a couple of operators question if I had a snorkel and recommended that I use one if I had it with me but none of them insisted that I do so. I always ask what their policy is. I don't use my snorkel when diving because it doesn't attach to my prescription mask easily.

Well, if you want to be a PADI instructor, this has everything to do with the real world. You are correct in that there are no laws regarding snorkles (except maybe local ordinances), but having a snorkle is a PADI requirement to teach PADI scuba divers.

ReefGuy:: Thanks for the update but I reeeeeeealy don't think that I want to be a PADI instructor. I just want to do some diving in a warm environment with some nice, pleasant people.

My take of "have" a snorkel is this.

I have one. Its safely stored in the car.

Nowhere does it say you have to wear the damn thing.

In fact, nowhere does it say you have to wear any of the stuff in that list, simply have it somewhere:)

As far as it related to students ive issued my OW students with a snorkel and told them to stuff it in a BCD pocket for the lessons where snorkel skills are being performed. Other than that i've just told them they need to "have" one somewhere. To date that means all bar 2 of them have left it nice and safe in their bag.
As far as i can tell that meets all the performance requirements and standards.

I thought the orginal poster didn't want to spark a debate? LMAO

Actually, the original poster was asking what the PADI standards were regarding instructor requirements.

A pretty specific question, and answered on the first reply.

The "debater" made no attempt to actually answer the question.
