I was just curious to see if anyone had done some diving in Smith Mountain Lake near Roanoke, VA. It's a great place for boating, but I've been told that it is a very dangerous place beneath the water. Lots of entanglement risks.

There are rumors of a town somewhere, I think ice9 was doing some research on it. It's a flooded valley, and from what I read is the trees are still there and pose a risk. Seen lots of talk about it, but haven't seen people said that they went there and it was good/bad.

Moneta Va. Been there. Not diving though. Canoe and power boat. Huge Lake. They also filmed What About Bob. Just like any man made lake there are trees and things to snag you. Just keep your eyes open.

Once again, I'll be at Smith Mountain Lake in 2 weeks (July 19-26).

Two years ago, I thought about exploring whether diving was an option - didn't get any farther than thinking about it.

Last year I drove around to every place that a 2 month old article suggested rented scuba equipment (and got laughed at), and posted a thread here and didn't get any interest until after I'd already left the lake.

So . . . another year rolls around and I'm thinking about trying again. I have my own equipment this time that I may bring with me (car space permitting). Problem is that no one else in my family dives (much).

Anyone game for trying a dive? If nothing else, my parents could park a pontoon overhead to ward off the speed demons :) For reference - we stay near the State Park.

I'd be interested in joining you, but unfortunately our dates don't match. If I go, I'll be there in early August. Please post a report if you go diving. Thanks

I got wet last night for a few minutes - don't know that I'd really call it diving :)

Since I don't have a buddy yet, I probably won't venture beyond the shallow shore area in front of the condo we're staying in, with several surface swimmers/snorkelers overhead to help fend off any boats that ignore my dive flag.

It was about what I expected - mucky bottom with tree stumps, small fish (there are some larger ones around, but they weren't out last night), and poor visibility. Good for practicing buoyancy control and navigation skills - but not terribly interesting.

Oops....guess that report won't entice many buddies .... what I meant to say was it is the most exciting Virginia dive I've ever done :D

If anyone wants to try something a bit more adventurous, PM me. I'm here until Friday (7/25)
