I'm a 59 year old diver who has recently encounted problems with insomnia. my doctor has prescribed Lunesta. As long as I have 8 hours before doing anything that requires 100% . Like driving. My question is, if i make sure I have at least 8 to 9 hours before diving, am I taking any undo risk??

Peak serum concentrations are achieved within one hour of dose administration, but the half-life of the drug is six hours. Therefore, after eight hours, a significant amount of drug remains in the body. I would definitely make sure you have tried taking it for a number of days, to monitor your status the morning after. Hypnotics decrease attentiveness and increase reaction time, not good things for a diver.

If you don't have an underlying medical condition that is causing your insomnia, you might consider seeking treatment from an sleep specialist. CBT (cognitive behavorial therapy) for insomnia seems to be at least as effective if not moreso than most of the common sleep meds currently available for treating learned insomnia. And, no side effects. :)
