Like I said... Take a picture with it and look at it. If it is too dark then take it off.
I hardly ever used the diffuser. But if you are using the wide angle lens it gives a better coverage with the diffuser than without. Also when there are a lot of particles in the water the diffuser gives you a bit less backscatter.
Just experiment. That is the beauty of digital pictures. Instant feedback and no cost of film.
